When people retire from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, the one thing they always say is "I’m really going to miss my OCC family." That’s a really telling statement to me.

My Path to the OCC

I grew up in the Midwest and come from a family of financial professionals—you might say I was destined for a career in the industry. My father was a banker. When I graduated from college, he told me the best thing I could do for my career would be to start in bank examination. Being familiar with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s (OCC) reputation, he encouraged me to work here instead of other agencies.

My Work

I work in the OCC’s Enterprise Governance Unit. We’re responsible for assessing the effectiveness of internal processes and controls to ensure that the OCC meets its bank supervision goals.

I work with a fantastic group of people. As a project lead, I spend most of my time interacting with different people throughout the organization. It’s a great way to develop relationships and learn about the inner workings of the agency.

On Culture

What impresses me the most about our culture is the level of respect people have for each other here. You don’t encounter a competitive environment at the OCC. Everyone is supportive of one another and focused on helping you succeed.

Examiners in particular spend a lot of time on the road. Sometimes you see your co-workers more than your family. When people retire from the OCC, the one thing they always say is “I’m really going to miss my OCC family.” That’s a really telling statement to me.

On Succeeding at the OCC

Work hard and get really good at your job. The OCC culture is one that respects competence. The organization is so supportive of continuing education and training that all the resources you need to succeed are at your fingertips.

Also, look for ways to get involved and hone your leadership skills. I serve as the president of the Women’s Network, one of our employee network groups (ENG). Our ENGs bring employees with similar interests together and serve as wonderful support systems for those looking to advance in their careers.
