Joined OCC: 2014

Discovering the Internship

I started part-time at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) as an intern in 2014. As an accounting major, I knew I wanted to get more experience in my field. After starting here, I decided to add another major in information systems/operations management and will earn my degree in the fall of 2015.

My Work as an Intern

I work primarily with OCC’s travel department. Employees submit expense vouchers, and my team monitors charges and ensures they’re compliant with the OCC’s travel policy. I audit employee expenses and make small reconciliations.

The agency does a great job of allowing interns to make a real contribution and integrating them into day-to-day work. We’re invited to sit in on meetings and encouraged to ask questions. The OCC trusts me to take on challenging assignments and perform important tasks that affect the organization. The work I’m doing feeds into the agency’s mission, and I feel I’m making a difference.

My Favorite Thing About the OCC

When you discover something you think could help you, the OCC works to accommodate those needs quickly. I asked for an opportunity to learn more about the agency’s overall operations and got it the next day. If you’re motivated to learn, your managers will do everything they can to help you grow.

On Support and Teamwork

You derive support from everyone. I’m not afraid to ask questions, and I frequently bounce ideas off of my team. Whenever I have a challenging assignment, someone with more experience is there to help.

Advice

Be honest with yourself before joining an organization. Taking a step back to consider how you would fit in with an agency benefits you and your employer.

Outside of Work

I enjoy staying active and playing basketball. I’m also an avid reader and spend a lot of time volunteering in the community.
